Notably, State Bank of India (SBI) in a compliance affidavit filed on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that it has handed over digital data about electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Citing a 2018 gazette notification, the SBI said the election bond amount which was not encashed by political parties within the 15-day validity period has been transferred to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. The Supreme Court on Monday rejected SBI’s plea to extend the March 6 deadline to submit data to the ECI. CJI D.Y. A constitution bench headed by Chandrachud declared the Electoral Bond Scheme, 2018 unconstitutional on February 15 and ordered SBI to immediately stop issuing them.

It has also asked SBI to submit details of electoral bonds purchased since April 2019 to the ECI by March 6 for publication on the official website of the electoral body. In its February 15 order, the Supreme Court had said that the SBI would have to disclose the details of each electoral bond deposited by political parties, including the date of encashment and the value of the electoral bond. SBI shall submit the above information to ECI within three weeks from the date of this decision by March 6, 2024.
