Sources said that the central government is also mulling buying cotton at the minimum support price (MSP) unconditionally to grow other crops. Government agencies like NAFED and NCCF can sign contracts with farmers for five years, government sources said. According to sources, if farmers choose to move away from the water-stressed paddy crop, the government may consider procurement of pulses, maize and cotton at MSP without any quantity restrictions.

A portal is being set up by the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs, where farmers can register by providing information like their Aadhaar card number. Farmers will have to self-authenticate on the portal. Farmers have to mention growing these pulses and maize crops. Last month, a committee of three Union ministers had proposed procurement of these five crops at MSP for five years by government agencies as part of the government’s efforts to end farmers’ protests along the Punjab-Haryana border. . However, farmers’ organizations have rejected this proposal of the government and continued their strike.

Sources said that the government has decided to implement this proposal given to farmer organizations as it wants to promote crop diversification. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal, Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda and Minister of State for Home Nityananda Roy held four rounds of talks with the farmers’ leaders regarding their demands including statutory MSP guarantee. A large number of farmers are camping on the Punjab-Haryana border with their demands.
